City Shopping Guide: Louisville

You can't beat the Bluegrass!

City Shopping Guide: Louisville

There is no doubt that Louisville draws its most famous crowd for the Kentucky Derby. Who doesn't love to sip mint juleps under a huge hat and bet on horses? Churchill Downs isn't the only thing that's hot in this Bluegrass town.

The emerging culinary scene is something to brag about- just ask Chef Bobby Benjamin! Not to mention the independent boutiques that line the streets of some of Louisville's hottest hoods. So we also enlisted Peacock Boutique owner Claire Drury, along with HauteMommaStuff.com's own Jennifer Lee Mueller, to share the ins and outs that make their city the best place to shop, sip and eat on our trip through the Slugger city!

Name: Claire Drury
Occupation: Peacock Boutique Owner
Neighborhood: Crescent Hill

Describe your personal style.
Versatile. I'm always thinking day-to-evening. Interesting blazers, bold jewelry and layers are a must. Flats for the day but I always have a pair of heels around to throw on.

Describe Louisville’s overall style.
Casual chic.

Which item(s) must visitors pack when heading to Louisville?
A ponytail holder. The humidity!

Can’t forget about boots! Best pair?
McQ by Alexander McQueen flat black knee boots. What I'm lusting for… Christian Louboutin's fringe suede boots... sigh.

Must shop boutique(s)?
Peacock Boutique of course! 15 Ounce Premium Denim, Clodhoppers, Blink, and Circe. They are all long-time Louisville shopping staples. Rodes for Men and Scout for the home, too!

Best place to eat?
Jack Fry'sLa Coop, Decca, and Seviche. Garage Bar for pizza. Blue Dog Bakery or Ghyslain for lunch.

Best night scene to show off your Louisville style?
Proof on Main. You can sip a martini and stroll through the adjoining hotel lobby (21c) checking out the latest art installation.

Any up and coming designer(s) that has caught your eye?
Gomez-Gracia, a British contemporary label, is known for being feminine and refined with an edgy, rock-n-roll twist.

Chef bobby benjamin

Name: Chef Bobby Benjamin
Occupation: Executive Chef of La Coop: Bistro à Vins
Neighborhood: St. Matthews

Describe your personal style.
Typically I’m rocking the chef coat, but when I’m not at the bistro, which is rare, I dress for comfort – a great pair of jeans, T-shirt, & flip-flops. (My wife buys all my clothes. She’s my stylist.)

Describe Louisville’s overall style.
Eclectic, artistic and food-driven

Which item(s) must visitors pack when heading to Louisville?
A bourbon flask and an appetite for good food, other than that…come on!

Can’t forget about?
A great fitting, comfortable, & stylish T-shirt. My favorite brands are PASTE & French Connection.

Must shop boutique(s)? (We love a man’s point of view on where he shops in Louisville.)
Louisville has a lot of great vintage boutiques such as Nitty Gritty, The Acorn, & Hey Tiger. For high end shopping, I would go to Rodes for Him & for Her or Von Maur. Zappo’s 6pm Shoe Outlet is about 20 minutes outside of town in Shepherdsville, KY – you can find some great deals there! I know my wife loves to shop at Blink Boutique, Clodhoppers, & Sassy Fox Consignment. If you are looking for diamonds or a Rolex, you can go see her at Merkley Kendrick Jewelers, the second oldest independent jewelers in the nation.

Best place to eat?
There are so many wonderful restaurants … Basa, Seviche A Latin Restaurant and Doc Crow’s Southern Smokehouse and Raw Bar are some favorites that come to mind.

Best night scene to show off your Louisville style?
NuLu has a great night scene. In particular, I would try to make it to the First Friday Trolley Hop, which combines a gallery hop & roaming cocktail party in the downtown & NULU district.

Any up and coming designer(s) that has caught your eye?
I know Gunnar Deatherage is from here & is expected to do some amazing things. (He is on this season of Project Runway.) But, ask me about up and coming chefs that have caught my eye & I could go on & on!

jennifer lee mueller

Name: Jennifer Lee Mueller
Occupation: Owner HauteMommaStuff.com
Neighborhood: St. Matthews

Describe your personal style.
Traditional and sophisticated with a dash of super trendy.

Describe Louisville's overall style.
Accepting. In Louisville you see many different individualistic styles. Each area of town has its own personal style that people fully embody or tweak to meet their personal stylistic needs.

Which item(s) must visitors pack when heading to Louisville?
Well this summer it has been super haute! So pack tons of sexy fun dresses- short or maxi. Can’t forget about...Wedges ...seriously the best shoe ever!!!! They go with everything and they are comfortable.

Must shop boutique(s)?
Blink, Clodhoppers, Circe

Best place to eat?
Louisville has an amazing local food movement right now, where older established restaurants are improving and new ones are popping up all over! A few of my favorites are Mozz, Seviche, Marketplace, Proof, Jack Fry's, and Jeff Ruby's.

Best night scene to show off your Louisville style?
Proof / 21c is my favorite. Did someone say rooftop?

Any up and coming designer(s) that has caught your eye?
I love up and coming designers, but my style lends on the side of the iconic/traditional style designers as well as the borderline bohemian like DVF, Trina Turk, Shoshanna, Voom, Torn, WildFox and the ever expanding House of Harlow line.
A few I must mention, ellelauri. I’m loving the colors! Victoria Beckham – Not up and coming, but amazing and more boutiques are starting to carry her. She's simply brilliant.
